Frequently asked questions

Here are a few things you need to know about Laser Treatment for Snoring

There are two ways that a laser can be used.

  1. Surgically – also known as laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP). Here the uvula (the dangly bit at the back of your throat) is cut or vapourised with the laser leading to the stiffening of the soft palate. As a result, the vibration of the uvula is reduced leading to a decrease in snoring.
  2. Non-Surgically – a less invasive using Erbium YAG laser technology. In this case the heat from the laser, stiffens and tightens the tissue thus resulting in less vibration and snoring.

Here we are going to focus on the Non-Surgical application of the laser

There are generally 3 to 4 visits lasting 20mins.

Each visit is about a week apart.

The laser treatment for snoring is generally painless. No anaesthetic is used, and you can go back to work straight away.

The laser treatment for snoring is quite effective if the course of treatment is completed. If the full course is not complete, then the effectiveness is dramatically reduced.

It must be emphasised that the laser treatment is not a cure for sleep apnoea (a more serious condition). So, it is imperative that you get checked thoroughly so that you can be assessed for being a candidate for treating snoring with the laser.

The biggest advantages are that it is quick and comfortable and there is no downtime from work.

Treatments can effectively reduce or eliminate snoring for 6 to 12 months or even longer in some.

It is important to note that repeat regular treatments will be necessary every 9 to 12 months as the effect of the treatment wears off.

Some people get a mild discomfort in the throat and sometimes some people get mild swelling and redness. Taking some over the counter pain killers are helpful for these mild discomforts.
